Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is complicated and yes it is very poor and rich. I wanted to see a side other than the South Zone…..
Yes I did it! You know why, because I refuse to believe that a city as beautiful, and complicated as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil should be experienced without seeing as much of the full picture as possible.
There is a huge debate about whether you should visit favelas or other poorer areas of a city when you go on vacation. I believe it depends on your mindset. I understand that there are many viewpoints. Personally, I ran a political campaign in one of the poorer areas in the southside of Chicago, Illinois. I had no problem walking down those streets, making friends and taking care of business. I felt comfortable. I didn’t go to the favela to just snap a picture of poorer people. My friend Junior and I spent time enjoying the neighborhood, and I ate the BEST food in all of Brazil at a local restaurant in Rochina. We went to his friends house at the top of the favela and got on top of his roof where I was able to get the best view of Rochina, and Rio de Janeiro. I really enjoyed my time in Rochina, and personally I believe it has one of the most beautiful views of Rio. I’ll let my friend Junior explain it in the video below.
